Histoire du domaine
The Paul Jaboulet Aîné estate was founded in 1834 in Tain-l’Hermitage by Antoine Jaboulet, born in 1807. It subsequently expanded under the management of his sons, Paul and Henry, and then their descendants. In 1919, the family acquired the Saint-Christophe Chapel, situated at the summit of the Hermitage hill. Louis Jaboulet took over the family business in 1940 and ran it for several decades. The estate created ‘Parallèle 45’, a Côtes-du-Rhône cuvée, in 1950. Gérard Jaboulet took over in 1977 and expanded the estate’s international reach until his death in 1997. The Frey family took over Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 2006, whilst Caroline Frey took charge of the business and began converting the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. A new gravity-fed cellar was built in 2010. The vineyards were certified organic in 2016. In 2023, the Domaine de la Chapelle was established to bring together the La Chapelle and Le Chevalier de Stérimberg cuvées. Caroline Frey stepped down from the management of the family estates in July 2025; no sufficiently reliable source has made it possible to identify by name the person currently directly responsible for winemaking at Paul Jaboulet Aîné.
La Maison Bleue
La Maison Bleue is a red Hermitage made from pure Syrah, crafted from the eastern terroirs of the hill, characterized by deeper soils associated with the Rhône river terraces. Starting with the 2015 vintage, it replaced the former La Petite Chapelle cuvée. The estate presents it as an expression combining finesse and complexity.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name refers to a stone house with blue shutters located in the Hermitage vineyard, formerly used by winemakers and still used for drying biodynamic plants and vin de paille.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2015
- Style of the cuvée
- A red Hermitage seeking a harmonious, fresh, and complex expression of Syrah, with greater finesse and accessibility rather than massive power.
- Position within the range
- A red Hermitage from the Collection range, coming from the eastern terroirs of the hill and distinct from La Chapelle.
Histoire de la cuvée
Launched under this name with the 2015 vintage, La Maison Bleue succeeds La Petite Chapelle. Its identity refers to an old vineyard workers' house located in the heart of the Hermitage vineyard, which has been restored and is still used for the estate's winemaking activities.
