Histoire du domaine
Olivier Jullien founded Mas Jullien in Jonquières in 1985. The estate began with three hectares of old vines and produced its first vintage whilst its founder was still completing his training. Olivier Jullien built the original cellar himself and vinified his first harvest using deliberately simple equipment. In 1989, he conducted an experiment in sulphur-free vinification and ageing, an endeavour that characterised his early years of research. Over time, he developed the vineyard layout and grape varieties through the purchase and sale of vines, whilst seeking to maintain a limited area under cultivation. He states that he sold nearly ten hectares in 2003 and 2004, before reacquiring certain vineyards previously associated with Mas Cal Demoura, which his father had established. The estate now cultivates around 18 hectares and produces red, white and rosé wines. Olivier Jullien remains both the owner of Mas Jullien and directly responsible for its winemaking.
La Brune
La Brune is a distinct red cuvee from the eponymous lieu-dit in the Terrasses du Larzac. It was made into a standalone wine following the acquisition of an adjoining plot of old Cinsault, combined notably with Grenache. The terroir is characterized by deep, porous soils rich in clay, ensuring a steady water supply to the vine.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the lieu-dit La Brune, the estate's historical terroir from which the grapes originate.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2016
- Style of the cuvée
- A red wine sought after for its finesse and fruit precision, featuring a smooth texture, enveloping tannins, and a profile that is more ethereal than powerful.
- Position within the range
- A confidential terroir cuvee, more accessible in its youth than Autour de Jonquieres.
Histoire de la cuvée
The lieu-dit La Brune had long contributed to the estate's wines. The purchase of an adjoining plot of old Cinsault led Olivier Jullien to rethink his approach to this terroir and create a distinct cuvee, whose first documented vintage is 2016.
