Histoire du domaine
Étienne Guigal founded Maison Guigal in Ampuis in 1946, having worked at Vidal-Fleury from 1924 onwards and played a part in the development of this Rhône-based estate. He produced wine from 67 vintages in Côte-Rôtie during his career. In 1961, his son Marcel Guigal took over the management of the business alongside his father, who had lost his sight. Bernadette Guigal joined the family business in 1973. The company acquired the Vidal-Fleury estates in the early 1980s, whilst maintaining their identity and commercial autonomy. In 1995, the family acquired Château d’Ampuis, on the banks of the Rhône. Philippe Guigal, who trained in oenology, officially joined the company in 1997 after having been involved in the technical aspects for several years. In 2001, the acquisition of the Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit estates expanded the family’s vineyards in the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage appellations. The company established its own cooperage at Château d’Ampuis in 2003. Philippe Guigal is now managing director and head of winemaking, alongside Marcel Guigal, chairman of the family business.
La Turque
La Turque is a red Côte-Rôtie from a plot in the Côte Brune, classified by Guigal among its "Trésors". It primarily combines syrah with a minor proportion of viognier and undergoes extended aging in new oak barrels. The estate presents it as a powerful and spicy wine, uniting the strength of the Côte Brune with the subtlety generally associated with the Côte Blonde.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the La Turque plot, located on the Côte Brune; its etymology is not documented in the sources consulted.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1985
- Style of the cuvée
- Concentrated, powerful and spicy Côte-Rôtie with a silky texture and elegant tannins, combining the depth of the Côte Brune and the aromatic finesse brought notably by the viognier.
- Position within the range
- Single-vineyard flagship of Côte-Rôtie, positioned within Guigal's high-end "Les Trésors" collection.
Histoire de la cuvée
The plot had produced an individual wine in 1935, before a long interruption. Marcel Guigal revived its single-vineyard expression with the 1985 vintage, which is the first documented La Turque cuvée under Guigal.
