Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1948, when François Raveneau married Andrée Dauvissat and brought together the vineyards of both families. At that time, the couple practised mixed farming, as did many families in Chablis. François Raveneau became the first member of his family to produce and bottle his own wines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the estate expanded, against a backdrop of technical advances that, in particular, provided better protection against spring frosts. François Raveneau then devoted himself entirely to viticulture and acquired plots of land, including some in the Chablis grands crus. His son Jean-Marie joined the estate in 1978 after completing his studies. Bernard Raveneau, after gaining experience in the Burgundian wine trade, in turn joined his brother in 1995, when François retired. Isabelle Raveneau joined the estate in 2010, followed by Maxime Raveneau in 2017. Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau now run the family estate; Isabelle is responsible for winemaking, within an organisation where family members also help with work in the cellar and the vineyards. The estate vinifies grapes from its own vineyards and harvests them by hand; the wines are aged in barrels before bottling.

Resin, spices, and menthol notes can be detected in the aromatic profile of the 2004 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre. A sappy, fleshy wine, it offers a light to medium-bodied character filled with salt, sea shells, slate, and minerals. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. The Raveneau brothers were in the process of bottling their 2004s when I visited the estate in late April, 2006. “This is a vintage of pleasure, the 2004s are simple wines, they do not have a powerful constitution,” said Bernard Raveneau, who concentrates on vineyard work and handles the vinifications. (His brother Francois deals with all the tractor work as well as the administrative issues.) He reiterated what I’d heard in all of Burgundy’s cellars, that the yields had gotten totally out of control during the rain-plagued month of August. “We harvested 70 hectoliters per hectare on average across the entire estate. We’ve never seen such a plethoric vintage!” Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524

Middle-aged wet wool nose but real vitality. Lots of alcohol and masses of acidity! Really still quite painful to taste. Hard work for the moment but promising for the long term.
