Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1948, when François Raveneau married Andrée Dauvissat and brought together the vineyards of both families. At that time, the couple practised mixed farming, as did many families in Chablis. François Raveneau became the first member of his family to produce and bottle his own wines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the estate expanded, against a backdrop of technical advances that, in particular, provided better protection against spring frosts. François Raveneau then devoted himself entirely to viticulture and acquired plots of land, including some in the Chablis grands crus. His son Jean-Marie joined the estate in 1978 after completing his studies. Bernard Raveneau, after gaining experience in the Burgundian wine trade, in turn joined his brother in 1995, when François retired. Isabelle Raveneau joined the estate in 2010, followed by Maxime Raveneau in 2017. Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau now run the family estate; Isabelle is responsible for winemaking, within an organisation where family members also help with work in the cellar and the vineyards. The estate vinifies grapes from its own vineyards and harvests them by hand; the wines are aged in barrels before bottling.

Les Clos

Les Clos is one of the seven officially recognized Climats within the Chablis Grand Cru appellation and the largest of them all, covering nearly 26 hectares. It occupies the entire height of the hillside on the right bank of the Serein and benefits from a south-westerly exposure as well as a relatively steep slope. The soils become more stony and chalky towards the top, while they are deeper and more clayey at the bottom. On the general scale of Chablis Grand Cru, the hillside rests on Kimmeridgian marls and limestones containing Exogyra virgula fossils, but this geology is not detailed separately for Les Clos by the sources consulted.

Histoire de la parcelle

The terroir was planted with vines before 1267 and may constitute the original core of the Chablis vineyard farmed by the Cistercians of Pontigny. Its former name forms evoke the walls that demarcated properties, limited erosion and protected the vines. Les Clos has been cited since the 19th century among the finest crus of Burgundy; the Chablis Grand Cru appellation was recognized on January 13, 1938.

Raveneau’s 2006 Chablis Les Clos offers a mysterious profusion of floral, nobly fungal, and mineral aromas. Gripping phenolics and tactile mineral intensity – chalk, tangerine and grapefruit zest, white pepper – are imbedded in a lusciously rich yet fresh white peach and citrus matrix so vivid I almost expected to find pulp in the bottom of my glass. In its elegant, shimmering interplay of mineral and fruit dimensions and scintillating, bitter-sweet floral perfume, and nut oils – all allied to tactile grip – this reminds me also of a great Riesling or Gruner Veltliner from the Wachau’s Achleiten. But the specific manifestations of fruit, flowers, and minerals here could only be realized in Chablis. The empty glass is mesmerizing, almost magic. Bernard Raveneau is an unabashed partisan of his 2005s – and no wonder, based on the subset of those that I tasted, including a magnificent Valmur which he rightly terms “complete” and “close to his ideal.” Raveneau is less effusive in praise of his 2006s – each of which I tasted from a selection of barrels – opining that lavish fruit and richness are precisely this collection’s fortes. I think he underestimates the depth of his own 2006s, and only hope I have opportunity to revisit some of them in five or ten years. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel.
