Domain Raveneau Chablis Blanchot 2006

Domaine Raveneau Chablis Blanchot 2006 is a white Burgundy wine from the Blanchot grand cru in the Chablis appellation. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay, it comes from some of the estate's oldest vines. The Wine Advocate awards it 94-95/100, highlighting a concentrated and satin-textured palate where fruit richness balances with persistent chalky minerality. The publication estimates it could benefit from at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring.

Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1948, when François Raveneau married Andrée Dauvissat and brought together the vineyards of both families. At that time, the couple practised mixed farming, as did many families in Chablis. François Raveneau became the first member of his family to produce and bottle his own wines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the estate expanded, against a backdrop of technical advances that, in particular, provided better protection against spring frosts. François Raveneau then devoted himself entirely to viticulture and acquired plots of land, including some in the Chablis grands crus. His son Jean-Marie joined the estate in 1978 after completing his studies. Bernard Raveneau, after gaining experience in the Burgundian wine trade, in turn joined his brother in 1995, when François retired. Isabelle Raveneau joined the estate in 2010, followed by Maxime Raveneau in 2017. Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau now run the family estate; Isabelle is responsible for winemaking, within an organisation where family members also help with work in the cellar and the vineyards. The estate vinifies grapes from its own vineyards and harvests them by hand; the wines are aged in barrels before bottling.

Parcelle & terroir

Blanchot

Blanchot is one of the seven officially demarcated climats that can complement the Chablis Grand Cru appellation. It covers 12.7 hectares at the eastern extremity of the Grands Cru hill, on a steep and sheltered slope. Its east-south-east orientation limits sunlight predominantly to the morning and promotes slow ripening. The terroir exhibits high local variability, ranging from limestone, light shell-bearing clays, pebbles, and blue or green clays.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name of the Blanchot climat has been associated with the Chablis Grand Cru appellation since its recognition by the decree of January 13, 1938. Its specific parcel area was officially demarcated by the INAO; the product specification associates it with the cadastral lieu-dit "Côte de Blanchot" in the Fyé sector, in the commune of Chablis.

Raveneau’s 2006 Chablis Blanchots – from some of the estate’s oldest vines – represents a jump in quality, and not just on account of its expected richness, but also for its clarity, satiny textural allure, flavor diversity, and sheer concentration. Brown-spiced apple, apricot, toasted nuts, meat stock, and tactile chalky minerality mingle in a complex colloquy, and for all of this wine’s opulence, the persistence of mineral dimensions it exhibits is extraordinary. I would expect this to reward at least 10-12 year’s aging. Bernard Raveneau is an unabashed partisan of his 2005s – and no wonder, based on the subset of those that I tasted, including a magnificent Valmur which he rightly terms “complete” and “close to his ideal.” Raveneau is less effusive in praise of his 2006s – each of which I tasted from a selection of barrels – opining that lavish fruit and richness are precisely this collection’s fortes. I think he underestimates the depth of his own 2006s, and only hope I have opportunity to revisit some of them in five or ten years. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel.
