Domaine Mugneret Gibourg

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is a family-run estate in Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits. Formed from the merger of the Mugneret-Gibourg and Georges Mugneret estates in 2009, it is run by sisters Marie-Christine Teillaud-Mugneret and Marie-Andrée Nauleau-Mugneret, who cultivate just over 8 hectares spread across nine appellations.

Histoire du domaine

The Mugneret family settled in Vosne-Romanée in 1930. Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret, who married in 1928, founded Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg in 1933. There, they produced red Burgundies, including Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Échezeaux. Their only son, Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist in Dijon, continued the family’s wine-making business alongside his medical practice. He gradually expanded the vineyard through acquisitions at Clos Vougeot in 1953, in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1971, in Ruchottes-Chambertin in 1977, and then at Les Vignes Rondes and Les Feusselottes in the 1980s. Following his death in 1988, his wife Jacqueline ensured the estate’s continuity alongside their daughter Marie-Christine, who was soon joined by Marie-Andrée after she completed her studies in oenology at the University of Burgundy. In 2009, Domaines Mugneret-Gibourg and Georges Mugneret merged under the name Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg. The estate is now run by Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée, whilst Lucie and Marion, their respective eldest daughters, joined the business in 2017 and 2018. The two sisters oversee the winemaking process directly, from the hand-harvesting to the blending and bottling at the estate.

Parcelle & terroir

Ruchottes-Chambertin

Ruchottes-Chambertin is a physically delimited climat and a Grand Cru appellation in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising the lieux-dits Ruchottes du Bas and Ruchottes du Dessus. Situated on the slope above the piedmont and higher up than the Chambertin vineyard, it benefits from an eastward exposure and a moderate slope. Its shallow, stony, and highly well-draining soils rest on fractured Bathonian limestones.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name "Ruchottes" appears in the archives of Gevrey in the 16th century, and the site appears to have already been planted with vines at that time. Its reputation seems to have been established by the 18th century; in 1855, Jules Lavalle classified the upper part as a first cuvée and the lower part as a second cuvée. A judgment by the Dijon court in 1931 recognized the appellation of origin and its boundaries, and the AOC Ruchottes-Chambertin was officially recognized on July 31, 1937.

Game; myriad lightly-cooked red fruits; caramelized, roasted root vegetables; and crushed stone dust render the nose and palate of the Mugnerets’ 2007 Ruchottes-Chambertin impressively complex, with ample primary fruit juiciness as well as saliva-inducing salinity helping the finish surmount slightly granular underlying tannins. This should prove profoundly satisfying over at least the next 8-10 years. The cool concentration and acid preservation of 2008 as a vintage would seem to mirror the finely-chiseled, fresh-fruited, modest alcohol style one associates with the Mugneret sisters, but the striking and surprising thing about their collection of that vintage is its youthful richness and textural allure. (The low-pH 2008s finished at only 12-12.5% alcohol.) As Marie-Christine Mugneret points out, they dropped crop to promote ripeness and drying and as a result were optimally positioned to take advantage of the September turn in the weather … optimally, that is, except in terms of yields! Most lots did not finish malo for a full year, and I tasted the wines in February at various stages (as noted) between barrel and bottle. “The sorting we did in early September in the vineyards in 2006 all had to be done on the sorting table in 2007,” remarks Marie-Andree Mugneret, explaining that ripening was too rapid in the latter vintage – in which they began picking September 1 – to permit such a triage at the vine. Despite the relatively swift malos and ripe fruit of 2007, bottling extended all the way until July of last year (for the Chaignots), but the Mugnerets share my view that the wines should for the most part be enjoyed relatively young in the flush of their fruit.
