Domaine Mommessin

Founded in 1865, Mommessin is a wine merchant now based in Quincié-en-Beaujolais, at the foot of Mont Brouilly. It produces mainly Beaujolais wines, particularly from Gamay, drawing on a selection of plots and partnerships with winegrowers. The brand belongs to the Boisset – La Famille des Grands Vins group, and its winemaking is overseen by Florent Georger.

Histoire du domaine

Jean-Marie Mommessin founded the house in 1865 at La Grange Saint-Pierre, a former outbuilding of Cluny Abbey situated in southern Burgundy. The key to this barn became the house’s emblem. Mommessin subsequently developed a business trading in and exporting wines from Burgundy and the Beaujolais region. In 1932, the Mommessin family acquired the Clos de Tart, a grand cru monopole in Morey-Saint-Denis. After more than a century in the Mâconnais region, the company’s headquarters were moved to Quincié-en-Beaujolais. The company now focuses on Beaujolais wines, whilst retaining a nod to its Burgundian heritage in its winemaking and ageing methods. It works with selected plots and partner winegrowers, rather than relying solely on production from a single, identified vineyard. The Clos de Tart, which had belonged to the Mommessin family since 1932, was sold to Artémis in 2017. Mommessin is now part of the Boisset – La Famille des Grands Vins portfolio. Florent Georger, described by the estate as its ‘winemaker’, is involved from the vineyard to the cellar and is directly responsible for the winemaking process.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos-de-Tart

Clos de Tart is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated climat in Morey-Saint-Denis, entirely enclosed by walls and farmed as a monopole. Its area forms an almost perfect rectangle on the mid-slope, with an eastern exposure, more precisely east-southeast according to the estate. The clay-limestone, carbonated, and well-draining soils overlie a complex succession of Jurassic limestones and marls. The rows are historically oriented north-south, perpendicular to the slope line.

Histoire de la parcelle

Initially called Climat de la Forge, the vineyard was acquired in 1141 by the Cistercian nuns of the Abbey of Tart, who kept it until the French Revolution. Sold as national property in 1791, it subsequently belonged to the Marey-Monge family, before being purchased by Henri Mommessin in 1932. The AOC Clos de Tart was officially recognized on January 4, 1939. The clos, which has remained undivided throughout its history, was acquired in 2018 by the Pinault family and integrated into Artémis Domaines.

Very deep crimson. Sweet, rich, strong perfume hints on the nose. Taffeta and density and this one positively rustles! So powerful – almost animal. Enormous intensity. The oak is pretty obvious at this stage. Thick, powerful, not to be ignored. One (expensive) facet of Burgundy...
