Domaine Leroy

Domaine Leroy is a Burgundian wine estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with vineyards spread across several appellations in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It was founded in 1988 by Lalou Bize-Leroy, a descendant of the family that founded Maison Leroy. The estate cultivates nearly 22 hectares using biodynamic methods and produces, in particular, village wines, premiers crus and grands crus.

Histoire du domaine

The Leroy family’s history in the wine industry began in 1868, when François Leroy founded Maison Leroy in Auxey-Duresses, a wine merchant business distinct from the current Domaine Leroy. His son Joseph expanded the business, and his grandson Henri Leroy joined the company in 1919. In 1942, Henri Leroy acquired a stake of approximately half of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. His daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy, joined the family business in 1955 and became its chairwoman in 1971. She was co-manager of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992. In the late 1980s, she acquired vineyards from the Charles Noëllat estate in Vosne-Romanée in 1988, followed by the Philippe-Rémy estate in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1989: these acquisitions form the Domaine Leroy as it stands today. The transition to biodynamic viticulture began during this period. Lalou Bize-Leroy remains the owner of the estate and is directly involved in the winemaking and ageing processes.

Richebourg

Richebourg is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited climat of Vosne-Romanée, consisting of the lieux-dits Les Richebourgs and Les Véroilles ou Richebourgs. It occupies the foothills of the slope between 260 and 290 meters, on a gentle slope facing east. Its shallow, clayey, carbonate-rich soils with high iron oxide content rest on Bajocian marls and soft limestones, beneath a colluvial cover blending scree, clays, and silts.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name Richebourg is attested as early as 1512. The Abbey of Cîteaux owned vines on the site, probably since the 17th century, and contributed to its renown. Recognized among the finest crus in the classifications of the 18th and 19th centuries, Richebourg was extended in 1924 to include Les Véroilles sous Richebourg following an agreement between owners ratified by the Court of Appeal of Dijon. The appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized on September 11, 1936, with the boundaries defined in 1924.

Smoky pungency mingles with dark berry concentrates and bitter-sweet floral essences on the nose of the Leroy 2006 Richebourg. This Pinot strides magisterially onto the palate, with obvious firmness and depth of tannic tread, but at the same time a plush wealth of sweet black fruits that overrides the tannins and makes for a surprisingly soothing impression. Crushed stone and roasted meats add authority to a long finish in which rather obvious tannins returned. Somehow, the character of the vintage seems to suit the Romanee-St.-Vivant better than it does this Richebourg. But it's early days, especially for a wine of such sweetness of fruit, muscularity, and sheer extract as this. Furthermore, it's hard for me to discount the possibility that the unexpected and slightly awkward reappearance of tannins in the finish here might be a function of temporary perturbation or Burgundian Pinot moodiness. The results achieved by Lalou Bize-Leroy in 2006 are all the more notable in view of the misgivings she expressed early on about this vintage. (And, as her reaction to 2004 demonstrates, she will not shy away from declassifying even her entire production if she feels that the wines are not up to their terroir pedigrees.) As voluptuously rich as are Bize-Leroy's 2006 reds, they preserve the sense of buoyancy and elegance common to so many of the standouts of this vintage, and one's gums will not come away fatigued by the strength of underlying tannin or the near-hyper-concentration displayed by her – to be sure awesome – 2005s. As every year, these wines represent meticulous vine manicure; miniscule yields ("above all regulated by severe pruning, not triage," Bize-Leroy emphasizes); and fidelity to biodynamic methods and metaphysics; and were bottled in the second December following the harvest. Despite their winsomeness, they have long life expectancies. Since, however, I have very little experience of their predecessors as they have matured, I have confined my prognostication to a few isolated and very general comments in the tasting notes that follow. Note that I have included as well under the heading "Leroy" the wines of Madame Bize-Leroy's Domaine d'Auvenay – its cellars located outside Saint-Romain – which now encompass two appellations in red, since inevitably when information is being sought about these wines, and even often when they are described, it is under the name "Leroy."
