Histoire du domaine
Domaine Léon Barral is situated in Lenthéric, in the Hérault department, on the schist-rich slopes of the Faugères appellation. Before the family took over, the estate’s grapes were delivered to the co-operative. In 1993, Didier Barral took over the estate with his brother Jean-Luc, and they began making wine on the estate. Didier Barral then gradually developed a system of organic mixed farming and livestock rearing, suited to shallow schist soils prone to drought and erosion. In particular, the vines are trained using the goblet system, and livestock play a part in the farm’s agronomic management. The estate also uses cover crops, organic matter inputs and measures designed to encourage beneficial wildlife. A document detailing the estate’s operations in 2023 indicates a total area of 130 hectares, of which 49 hectares are planted with vines, with an average yield of 20 to 30 hl/ha. Didier Barral is now recognised as the owner of the estate and oversees the winemaking process directly.
