Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, following his marriage to Geneviève Quanquin, who came from a family that owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Georges Roumier then settled in the village and gradually developed the family estate in the Côte de Nuits. He was one of the winemakers who bottled their own wines on the estate, at a time when this practice was still relatively uncommon. His son Jean-Marie officially succeeded him in 1961. In the 1950s, the estate expanded to include vineyards in Bonnes-Mares and the Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis, a 2.59-hectare plot acquired in 1953. A plot of Corton-Charlemagne was added to the estate in 1968. Jean-Marie Roumier then acquired a plot of Musigny Grand Cru in 1978. Christophe Roumier, a graduate in oenology, joined his father in the early 1980s, and the entire harvest has been bottled at the estate since the 1983 vintage. Since Jean-Marie’s retirement in 1990, Christophe Roumier has managed the estate and overseen the winemaking. The estate has also strengthened its independence by purchasing vineyards previously farmed under lease or sharecropping arrangements, notably in Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Chemical fertilisers were phased out in 1988, followed by herbicides in 1989; however, the estate is not certified organic.

Parcelle & terroir

Les Amoureuses

Les Amoureuses is a climat officially classified as a Premier Cru of the AOC Chambolle-Musigny, located immediately below the Musigny grand cru. Its morphology is heterogeneous: an upper southeastern-facing appendage precedes a main section curving from southeast to south, where the slope softens significantly towards the bottom. The shallow clay soil rests on a compact limestone substrate. The geology varies with altitude, with Calcaire de Comblanchien dominating in the upper two-thirds, while the lower third rests on Calcaire de Prémeaux and Marnes à Ostrea acuminata.

Origin of the vineyard name
According to the BIVB, the name likely comes from the Burgundian expression describing as "amoureuse" (amorous) a clayey soil that sticks to one's feet when wet. Other interpretations exist, without absolute etymological certainty.

Histoire de la parcelle

Les Amoureuses was already listed among the "first cuvées" of Chambolle in Jules Lavalle's classification published in 1855, right after Musigny and Petits-Musigny classified as head of cuvée. The AOC Chambolle-Musigny was recognized by decree on September 11, 1936. The specific parcel area granting the right to the Premier Cru designation was approved by the INAO on June 1 and 2, 1988, and the official specifications explicitly cite Les Amoureuses among the classified climats.

A haunting bouquet of iris and heliotrope; ripe, fresh red raspberry and cherry along with their spirituous proxies; and brown spices fills the nose from Roumier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, which offers a similarly ravishing palate display, silken in texture and underlain by metaphorically cool chalkiness and rich meat stock. The finish here preserves white-wine like clarity to floral and mineral nuances yet with powerful resonance, as well as buoyancy and sheer refreshment. I would anticipate its remaining ravishing for at least a decade. Rigorous triage - along with Christophe Roumier's seemingly intuitive sense for the limits and potential of the vintage - have resulted in a set of 2006s here that are youthfully generous, but in the best instances will be well worth cellaring. The fermentative regimen and elevage (including no racking until assemblage, to maximize contact with lees convey both fat and structure; yet early bottling to preserve fruit) were tailored to the vintage, whereas the regimen of new wood was little changed from other recent years, meaning around one-third for the premier crus. Stems were selectively included, up to something over one-third in the grand crus. I tasted these wines from barrel at 14 months and again from bottle at 18, and they had in most instances both gained textural allure as well as structure and refined their flavors, clearly demonstrating the success of Roumier's strategy.
