Domaine Dugat-Py

The Dugat-Py estate is a family-run business based in Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the Combe de Lavaux, in the Côte de Nuits. Stemming from a lineage of winegrowers who have been in the village since the 17th century, it is now run by Loïc Dugat-Py, the thirteenth generation of the family. The vineyard covers 15 hectares, spread across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, with a strong emphasis on old vines.

Histoire du domaine

The Dugat family’s winemaking heritage in Gevrey-Chambertin dates back to the 17th century. The Dugat estate was established in 1923 following the marriage of Fernand Dugat and Jeanne Bolnot, who also came from a family of local winegrowers. Pierre Dugat, son of Fernand and Jeanne, subsequently passed the vineyards on to his son Bernard, who produced his first vintage in 1975. Bernard Dugat married Jocelyne Py in 1979. After a period during which a significant proportion of the production was sold in bulk to wine merchants, the wines were bottled at the estate under the name Pierre Dugat from 1989 onwards. In 1994, Bernard adopted the name Dugat-Py for the estate, incorporating his wife’s surname. Their son Loïc joined the business in 1996 and produced his first vintage on his own in 2005. The vineyard expanded between 1995 and 2005 through purchases, leasehold arrangements and sharecropping, particularly in the Côte de Beaune. Trials in organic viticulture began in 1999; the estate has been fully certified organic since 2015. Loïc Dugat-Py is now the owner and is directly responsible for winemaking.

Parcelle & terroir

Chambertin

Chambertin is both a physically demarcated climat in Gevrey-Chambertin and the eponymous terroir of a Grand Cru appellation reserved for red wines. It occupies the middle of the slope, with an easterly exposure and a relatively moderate gradient compared to the neighboring Clos de Bèze. Its shallow, stony calcareous brown soils overlie entroquitic limestones and Bajocian marls, with a Bathonian component in the upper part.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name Chambertin has been known since the 13th century, and its winegrowing potential has been recognized for centuries. Thomas Jefferson cited it among his favorite wines in 1787, while Napoleon I's predilection for this wine contributed to its renown. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified it as "Tête de cuvée, cru hors ligne, vin extra". On October 17, 1847, its name was joined to that of Gevrey to form Gevrey-Chambertin; the Chambertin appellation was officially recognized on July 31, 1937.

The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru is another wine that still requires patience, unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of red berries, spices and orange zest, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut but layered palate that's built around tangy acids and plenty of stem tannin. This is concentrated and penetrating, but still very tightly wound.

100-year-old vines! Just 537 sq m. 100% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Aged in a 205-litre cask (even smaller in 2011 and 2012) made especially for him each year thanks to Francois Frères’ computer which even cuts the wood. Blackish crimson. He gets going with the pipette (always takes samples from two casks and blends them in a small goldfish bowl) to ensure no reductive element. Something quite different and heady. Great concentration of meatiness and majesty. Some high-toned mintiness. Much more expressive on the nose than the palate which is all mass and surliness at the moment. Just a great future wine with life but total introspection at the moment, though you certainly don’t need to take anything on trust. You can see all the ingredients here. Almost raw but not quite.
