Histoire du domaine

The origins of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé date back to 1450, when the estate’s historic building was established in Chambolle-Musigny. The property has remained in the same family throughout the centuries, including during the French Revolution. The name Vogüé became associated with the estate in 1766, following the marriage of Catherine Bouhier de Versalieu to Cerice François Melchior de Vogüé. In 1925, Count Georges de Vogüé inherited the vineyards from his father, Count Arthur de Vogüé, and gave the estate his name. He managed the estate for over fifty years. His granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, inherited the vineyards from their mother in 2002 and are the current owners. François Millet was responsible for winemaking from 1986 to 2021. Jean Lupatelli succeeded him in spring 2021 as winemaker and cellar master; his responsibilities were subsequently expanded to include the estate’s operational and commercial management. The estate’s vineyard comprises, in particular, 7.12 hectares in Musigny and 2.66 hectares in Bonnes-Mares.

Parcelle & terroir

Bonnes-Mares

Bonnes-Mares is a physically delineated Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, split between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, with the largest portion located in Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard forms approximately a rectangle south of Clos de Tart, on a gently sloping hillside with an easterly exposure. The light, gravelly, brown to reddish soils containing clay with flint rest on Jurassic limestone and white marl.

Origin of the vineyard name
Name attested since the late Middle Ages, of uncertain etymology. The BIVB favors the hypothesis of the old verb "marer", meaning to cultivate with care, rather than a reference to mother goddesses.

2017-2018

The 1957 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was fully mature on the nose as you would expect: cedar, scorched earth, bay leaf aromas abound, quite rustic but still with some presence before more black tea-like scents begin to dominate. The palate is medium-bodied with noticeable volatile acidity, fig-like aromas merging with vestiges of red fruit that suggest there might have been considerable chaptalization in this off-vintage. Not bad, and others liked it more than myself. Past its best for me. Tasted November 2016.
