Histoire du domaine

According to the estate’s account, the site’s wine-growing history dates back to Charlemagne’s donation of Corton vineyards to Saulieu Abbey in 775. The ecclesiastical estates were sold as national property in 1791; the vineyards were then acquired by François Ray, and subsequently by Simon Very. In 1835, Marie-Eugénie Very, daughter of Simon Very, married Charles Bonneau du Martray; her dowry included vineyards in Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton and Volnay. Their son, Marie-Eugène Bonneau du Martray, preserved the integrity of the estate through the phylloxera crisis and the conflicts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. René Bonneau du Martray, born in 1886, subsequently passed the estate on to his niece, Alice Colonna de Giovellina, wife of Jean le Bault de la Morinière. Jean le Bault de la Morinière joined the estate in 1969 and undertook, in particular, work to combat erosion and to regulate temperatures in the cellars. His son, Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, joined the estate in 1994 and gradually began the transition to organic farming from 1997, followed by a move to biodynamic farming from 2004. The estate states that this conversion was completed in 2011. E. Stanley Kroenke became the owner of the estate in 2017. Thibault Jacquet is in charge of management, whilst Emmanuel Hautus has been responsible for winemaking since 2011.

Parcelle & terroir

Corton Charlemagne (Aloxe Corton)

Corton-Charlemagne is a white Grand Cru appellation whose demarcated parcel area occupies the upper part of the montagne de Corton, across Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. In Aloxe-Corton, its geographical core corresponds to the climat Le Charlemagne; the appellation also unites En Charlemagne and several neighboring climats. The vineyard is located between 280 and 330 meters, on steep slopes of 20 to 23%, with a predominantly southwest exposure at the appellation scale. The clay-rich marly soils rest on an alternation of limestone beds and marls, beneath a thin layer of rendzinas.

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet orchard fruits mingled with honeycomb, butterscotch, iodine and smoke, the 1991 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a broad, satiny, enveloping palate that's fleshy and gourmand. This is an opulent, gourmand vintage for Bonneau du Martray that remains very youthful at over 30 years of age.
