Domaine Barge Cote Rotie Cuvée du Plessy 2017 Bouteille (75cl)
The 2017 Domaine Barge Côte-Rôtie Cuvée du Plessy is a red wine from the Rhône Valley, crafted by Domaine Gilles Barge in the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Its blend brings together 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. This cuvée relies mainly on vines from the Lancement and Boucharey sectors, as well as old vines from the Côte Blonde lieu-dit linked to Plessy. It thus illustrates an expression of Côte-Rôtie uniting Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier.

Histoire du domaine
The Barge family has been present in the vineyards of Ampuis since 1860. During the phylloxera crisis around 1890, Pierre Barge temporarily left the region to work in Paris, before the family returned to Ampuis at the beginning of the 20th century. Jules and Joséphine Barge replanted their own vines in 1918 and produced their first bottled Côte-Rôtie in 1929. In 1970, Pierre Barge and his brother André succeeded Jules and Joséphine, expanding the vineyard and bottle sales. Gilles Barge joined the estate in 1979 after viticultural training, then took over from Pierre and Germaine in 1993. Notably, he built a new cellar in 2000, while the estate developed single-plot cuvées such as Cœur de Combard, produced for the first time in 2007. In 2019, upon the retirement of Gilles and Alice Barge, management of the estate was handed over to Julien Barge, who was already in charge of vinification. The estate currently farms 5.7 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, 1 hectare in Condrieu, and 1.5 hectares in Saint-Joseph.
Cuvée du Plessy
A historic Côte-Rôtie cuvée from Domaine Barge, originally sourced from the vines of Joseph du Plessy in Côte Blonde. From 1994 onwards, it became a blend of several lieux-dits from the southern sector, keeping the old vines of Le Plessy as its core component. It primarily pairs Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name pays tribute to Joseph du Plessy, a neighboring winegrower whose vines in Côte Blonde formed the origin and foundation of this cuvée.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1979
- Style of the cuvée
- A traditionally crafted Côte-Rôtie, sought after for its finesse, balance, and aromatic character, featuring a structure suited for aging rather than a demonstrative or heavily oaked style.
- Position within the range
- Historically the main cuvée and the benchmark blend of the estate in Côte-Rôtie.
Histoire de la cuvée
The collaboration with Joseph du Plessy began in 1978. Gilles Barge vinified and bottled the grapes from his vines separately starting in 1979. When he took over the management of the estate in 1994, he transformed this reference into a traditional Côte-Rôtie blend, based on the vines of Le Plessy and complemented by several lieux-dits in the Côte Blonde sector.
