Domaine Meo Camuzet Clos Vougeot Le Passage 2023 Bottle (75cl)

The Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot Le Passage 2023 is a red Burgundy from the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, crafted by Domaine Méo-Camuzet. This 100% Pinot Noir cuvée, formerly known as Grand Maupertuis, comes from the Clos de Vougeot parcel. In 2023, the estate describes a concentrated dark fruit bouquet lifted by hints of almond, a rich and enveloping palate, followed by a lively, lightly tannic, and persistent finish. A few years in bottle will allow it to gain harmony and suppleness.

Domaine Méo Camuzet

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is a family-run estate based in Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits. Its vineyard comprises plots in the Côte de Nuits and, following the acquisition of vineyards in Volnay and Pommard in 2025, in the Côte de Beaune. The estate is managed by Jean-Nicolas Méo, whilst winemaking is overseen by the oenologist María Ignacia Navarro González.

Histoire du domaine

The estate’s history is linked to Étienne Camuzet (1867–1946), a winegrower, mayor of Vosne-Romanée and Member of Parliament for the Côte-d’Or, who gradually built up a substantial portfolio of vineyards in the early 20th century. In particular, he acquired the Château du Clos de Vougeot in 1920 and retained three hectares of vines within the clos after the château was sold to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in November 1944. On his death in 1946, his daughter Maria Noirot-Camuzet inherited the estate. Having no children of her own, she bequeathed it in 1959 to her nephew Jean Méo, who was then working in General de Gaulle’s office. Jean Méo maintained the sharecropping agreements, notably with the Faurois and Tardy families as well as with Henri Jayer. The estate adopted the name Méo-Camuzet in 1981, and its first bottles marketed under this label date from 1983. In 1984, Jean Méo gradually handed over the management to his son Jean-Nicolas, who moved to Vosne-Romanée in 1989 after studying business management and oenology. As all the sharecroppers ceased their activities in 2008, Jean-Nicolas Méo has since been managing all the estate’s vineyards. A separate wine-trading company, Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs, was established in the early 2000s with the same family shareholders. In 2025, the estate acquired 3.4 hectares of Pinot Noir in Volnay and Pommard, bringing the total area under its direct management to approximately 21.4 hectares.

Cuvée

Le Passage

Le Passage is a distinct cuvée from Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, originating from the plot previously identified by the estate as Grand Maupertuis. In 2023, Méo-Camuzet vinified and marketed this origin separately, alongside the "Près le Cellier" cuvée.

Histoire de la cuvée

The name "Le Passage" appears with the 2023 vintage. The estate clarifies that it replaces the designation "Grand Maupertuis" previously used for this plot origin, which had already been isolated notably in 2009 and 2017.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos de Vougeot

The Clos de Vougeot is a vast, single-piece vineyard enclosure, surrounded by walls and located at the foot of the Côte de Nuits slope, in the commune of Vougeot. Its terroir varies markedly from top to bottom: thin, gravelly soils on Bajocian limestone in the upper part, more clayey brown soils on limestone debris in the middle, and deeper, clayey and silty soils on a marly layer in the lower part. The site simultaneously constitutes a physically demarcated Burgundian climat and the emblematic parcel area of the AOC Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot or Clos Vougeot.

Histoire de la parcelle

The wine estate was gradually established by the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux starting from the early 12th century; a medieval agreement set boundaries that have remained almost unchanged, and the wall was built before the end of that century. The farm buildings were developed from the 12th to the 15th century, then complemented in 1551 by the Renaissance residence that became the château du Clos de Vougeot. The abbey kept the estate until the Revolution; the buildings and vineyards were confiscated and then sold as national property in 1791, subsequently leading to the fragmentation of the property. The appellation d'origine contrôlée Clos de Vougeot or Clos Vougeot was recognized by decree on July 31, 1937.
