Clos Saint Jean
Clos Saint-Jean is a family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape managed by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel. Its 47 hectares of vines are predominantly planted on rolled pebble terroirs, notably on the La Crau plateau. The estate produces its classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape as well as several parcel-specific or selection cuvées, among which are La Combe des Fous and Deus Ex Machina.

Histoire du domaine
Clos Saint-Jean has its origins in the early 20th century in the work of Edmond Tacussel, great-grandfather of Pascal and Vincent Maurel. The estate traces its creation to 1905 and indicates that the grape variety blend of its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains faithful to that defined back then by Edmond Tacussel. Following the untimely passing of their father in 1982, Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over an estate that was then producing only about 6,000 bottles and set about preserving and then restructuring the family heritage. A new direction was initiated in 2003 following their meeting with oenologist Philippe Cambie: his guidance evolved the winemaking methods and contributed to the affirmation of cuvées endowed with distinct identities, notably Deus Ex Machina. The estate continues to be managed today by Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with the gradual involvement of Valentin, Hugo, and Claire Maurel.
Deus Ex Machina
Deus Ex Machina is a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape combining mainly Grenache and Mourvèdre. The Grenache from the northern part of the historic parcel provides a tannic backbone linked to the red clays, reinforced by the Mourvèdre. Only free-run juice is used in its composition.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The Latin theatrical expression "Deus ex machina" refers to an unexpected external event that reverses the course of a situation. The name symbolizes the meeting with oenologist Philippe Cambie and the shift in direction undertaken by the estate in 2003.
