Histoire du domaine

The Chave family’s history in Rhône winegrowing dates back to 1481, following the allocation of land by a local lord at the end of the 15th century. The family’s origins lie on the hillsides that today correspond to the Saint-Joseph appellation. Gérard Chave took over the family estate in 1970 and consolidated its portfolio of plots on the Hermitage hill. Jean-Louis Chave joined his father in 1992, after studying in the United States, including a course in oenology at the University of California, Davis. He represents the sixteenth generation of the family and now runs the estate, whilst Gérard Chave remains involved in its operations. During the 1990s, the estate undertook to reclaim the Bachasson hillside in Saint-Joseph, where the family had historically cultivated vines. In 2009, he acquired Clos Florentin with a view to restoring this wine-growing area, where the vineyards had declined significantly following the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century. The registered vineyard covers 26 hectares, comprising 21 hectares of red grape varieties and 5 hectares of white grape varieties. Winemaking is overseen by Jean-Louis Chave, with grapes processed on a plot-by-plot basis prior to the estate’s blends.

A retasting of the 1998 Hermitage blanc confirmed its brilliant quality. It is an elegant, floral-scented, structured white Hermitage. It boasts fabulous concentration, but is less flattering and precocious than either the 1999 or 2000. If the latter two wines lean toward a flamboyant style, the 1998 should prove to be one of the more muscular, long lived, backward efforts requiring patience. When I arrived at 6:00 p.m., September 11, 2001, at Domaine Chave, I found Chave in tears and his family distraught. I had heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center, but not the subsequent collapse of both towers. Gerard Chave knows all about suicidal bombers, having served in the French military during the Algerian revolution. It took a long time to gather sufficient focus to do my tastings. However, the brilliant wines that unfolded in the cellars were, at least for several hours, a much needed antidote for pushing to the back of my mind the horror of 9-11-01. Spiced melon fruits, wet stones and dried yellow flowers with a honeysuckle edge. This has aged beautifully with the fat rendering from the palate over time to deliver a composed and smooth-edged core of melons, minerals and a fresh, toasty finish. This sits in a superb zone as a complete, mature white. Drink now. wine-searcher Price Shop Location France Sort By Price (Lowest)

Quite deep honey colour. Lovely evolution and burnishment on the nose. Coppery taste. Long and vital, like fermented honey! (Mead.) But fresh and vital! Very long. Just a hint of decay.
