Château Talbot Caillou Blanc 2000

Château Talbot Caillou Blanc 2000 is a Bordeaux white wine produced by Château Talbot, 4th Grand Cru Classé of 1855 in Saint-Julien. This cuvée blends 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. Caillou Blanc constitutes a rare expression of dry white wine from this appellation primarily renowned for its reds: the estate has cultivated white grape varieties here since the 1930s. The cuvée is traditionally aged in barrels on the lees with bâtonnage, a signature that accompanies the dominance of Sauvignon and the contribution of Sémillon.

Histoire du domaine

The name Château Talbot refers to John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and English governor of Guyenne, who was defeated at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. The estate belonged to the Marquises of Aux for nearly two centuries. In 1855, it was classified as a fourth grand cru in the Médoc and Graves wine classification. The Cordier family acquired Château Talbot in 1918. Désiré Cordier, followed by his son Georges and his grandson Jean, succeeded one another at the helm of the estate. Following the death of Jean Cordier, his daughters Lorraine and Nancy took over the estate. Nancy Bignon-Cordier, her husband Jean-Paul Bignon and their children are now continuing the family tradition. The estate’s main winery, designed by the architects Nairac and Vacheyrout, was completed in 2013. Jean-Max Drouilhet has been the winemaking director since 2007, whilst Jean-Michel Laporte has been the estate’s managing director since 2018.

Cuvée

Caillou Blanc

Caillou Blanc is the white wine of Château Talbot, sold under the Bordeaux Blanc appellation. It mainly blends Sauvignon Blanc with Sémillon and benefits from barrel aging on the lees with bâtonnage. It is the unique white wine production of an estate primarily renowned for its red wines from Saint-Julien.

Style of the cuvée
A highly aromatic dry white wine, generally marked by the freshness of Sauvignon, the richness and length of Sémillon, as well as exotic notes. Its barrel aging on the lees with bâtonnage gives it a structured profile, designed more for the table than for an aperitif.
Position within the range
The only white wine of Château Talbot, alongside the grand vin red and the second wine Connétable Talbot.

Histoire de la cuvée

Georges Cordier, grandfather of the current owners, was one of the first to replant white grape varieties in the Médoc during the 1930s. The estate indicates it has been producing Caillou Blanc since that decade, without specifying a documented first vintage.
