Histoire du domaine

The name Château Talbot refers to John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and English governor of Guyenne, who was defeated at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. The estate belonged to the Marquises of Aux for nearly two centuries. In 1855, it was classified as a fourth grand cru in the Médoc and Graves wine classification. The Cordier family acquired Château Talbot in 1918. Désiré Cordier, followed by his son Georges and his grandson Jean, succeeded one another at the helm of the estate. Following the death of Jean Cordier, his daughters Lorraine and Nancy took over the estate. Nancy Bignon-Cordier, her husband Jean-Paul Bignon and their children are now continuing the family tradition. The estate’s main winery, designed by the architects Nairac and Vacheyrout, was completed in 2013. Jean-Max Drouilhet has been the winemaking director since 2007, whilst Jean-Michel Laporte has been the estate’s managing director since 2018.

The evolved, soft, silky 2008 Talbot is unquestionably a sleeper of the vintage, offering a dark plum/garnet color, loads of roasted herb, berry, black cherry, plum and Asian spice aromas intermixed with an attractive forest floor-like note. Already drinking well, this medium-bodied St.-Julien should continue to evolve for 10-15+ years.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Volume of Merlot reduced by coulure. Pale garnet with a touch of brick. Lightly fragrant but more on the leafy, green side. Light and easy-going on the palate – more a luncheon claret. Less tannic presence so accessible and unlikely to evolve much further. Lacks a bit of excitement but fresh. Better to drink now.
