Histoire du domaine
In the 18th century, the Rieussec estate belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon. At the time of the 1855 classification, while owned by Mr. Mayne, it was recognized as a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes and Barsac. The property subsequently passed through the hands of Charles Crepin around 1870, Paul Defolie in 1892, Mr. Bannil in 1907, and then the Gasqueton family, who also owned Château Calon-Ségur. It later belonged to F.F. Berry during the war, to Mr. Balaresque from 1957, and then to Albert Vuillier starting in 1971. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired Rieussec in 1984 and had a new cellar built, used starting with the 1989 vintage, to enhance the precision of selections, fermentations, and aging. The 1988, 1989, and 1990 vintages marked this qualitative progression, which continued through the 1995-2005 decade. In 2004, the 2001 Château Rieussec was named "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator. The estate is currently managed by Olivier Trégoat, with Mathieu Crosnier as estate director and Bertrand Roux as cellar master.
