Petrus is a wine estate in Pomerol, situated on the appellation’s plateau, near Libourne. Its vineyard, covering approximately 11.4 hectares, consists mainly of Merlot planted on deep clay soils. Histoire du domaine

Plots corresponding to what would become Petrus are mentioned in the Pomerol archives as early as 1746, whilst the name Petrus first appears at the end of the 18th century. The Arnaud family owned the estate from 1770 onwards. The wine was mentioned by a Bordeaux wine merchant in 1837 and won gold medals at the Paris World’s Fairs of 1878 and 1889. In 1925, Edmonde Loubat acquired part of the estate, which at the time covered around 7 hectares, and gradually took control of it. She entrusted the marketing of the wine to Jean-Pierre Moueix after the Second World War. Following the death of Edmonde Loubat in 1961, Jean-Pierre Moueix gradually increased his stake and became the sole owner in 1969. During the same period, the vineyard was expanded through the acquisition of plots from the neighbouring Château Gazin, bringing its total area to around 11.4–11.5 hectares. Jean-Claude Berrouet was responsible for winemaking from 1964 onwards for more than four decades. Following the death of Jean-Pierre Moueix in 2003, his son Jean-François Moueix inherited Petrus and took over its management from 2009. Olivier Berrouet, Jean-Claude’s son, took charge of the vineyard and winemaking from the 2008 vintage onwards. The Moueix family currently holds 80 per cent of the shares, with the remaining 20 per cent held by Alejandro Santo Domingo.

An early September harvest in this hot year produced a 2003 that has reached full maturity. It offers notes of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, figs and black cherry jam. There are some rustic tannins in the finish, but this expansive, rich Petrus displays far more intensity and complexity than most expected given the difficulties in Pomerol in 2003. It should be consumed over the next 4-6 years.

Dark crimson. This unusually dense and heavy wine had a note of cloves that put me off. It was clearly very different from the rest of the line-up – very rich with some oak influence in evidence. Thick and flashy, it tasted so sweet there was a suggestion of cocoa powder. I usually respond to Petrus's opulence but not in this wine which seemed the most obviously 2003-like of the line-up and lacked refreshment. It was certainly very opulent and flattering but had a sour, drying finish.
