Château Petrus 1995 Magnum

Château Pétrus 1995 is a red wine from the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux, produced by Pétrus. Its blend consists of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Wine Advocate awards it 96/100 with a drinking window from 2007 to 2050; Jancis Robinson rates it 17.5/20, to be enjoyed between 2007 and 2016. Critics describe a very rich and powerful wine with a dense texture and marked tannins. The extended cellaring window indicated by The Wine Advocate destines it for long evolution in the cellar.

Petrus is a wine estate in Pomerol, situated on the appellation’s plateau, near Libourne. Its vineyard, covering approximately 11.4 hectares, consists mainly of Merlot planted on deep clay soils. The estate is now owned by the Moueix family, with a minority stake held by Alejandro Santo Domingo, and winemaking is overseen by Olivier Berrouet.

Histoire du domaine

Plots corresponding to what would become Petrus are mentioned in the Pomerol archives as early as 1746, whilst the name Petrus first appears at the end of the 18th century. The Arnaud family owned the estate from 1770 onwards. The wine was mentioned by a Bordeaux wine merchant in 1837 and won gold medals at the Paris World’s Fairs of 1878 and 1889. In 1925, Edmonde Loubat acquired part of the estate, which at the time covered around 7 hectares, and gradually took control of it. She entrusted the marketing of the wine to Jean-Pierre Moueix after the Second World War. Following the death of Edmonde Loubat in 1961, Jean-Pierre Moueix gradually increased his stake and became the sole owner in 1969. During the same period, the vineyard was expanded through the acquisition of plots from the neighbouring Château Gazin, bringing its total area to around 11.4–11.5 hectares. Jean-Claude Berrouet was responsible for winemaking from 1964 onwards for more than four decades. Following the death of Jean-Pierre Moueix in 2003, his son Jean-François Moueix inherited Petrus and took over its management from 2009. Olivier Berrouet, Jean-Claude’s son, took charge of the vineyard and winemaking from the 2008 vintage onwards. The Moueix family currently holds 80 per cent of the shares, with the remaining 20 per cent held by Alejandro Santo Domingo.

It is interesting how this wine continues to evolve. Unquestionably one of the vintage's superstars, the 1995 Petrus is taking on a personality similar to the extraordinarily backward, muscular 1975. This is not a Petrus that can be approached in its youth (i.e., the perfect duo of 1989 and 1990). The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by a knock-out nose of pain grille, jammy black fruits, and roasted coffee. On the palate, it possesses teeth-staining extract levels, massive body, and rich, sweet black fruits buttressed by powerful, noticeable tannin. A formidably endowed wine with layers of extract, this is a huge, tannic, monstrous-sized Petrus that will require a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Forget all the nonsense about Merlot producing sweet, soft, ready to drink wines, because low yielding, old Merlot vines made in the way of Petrus and other top Pomerols frequently possess as much aging potential as any great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world. Look for the 1995 Petrus to last for 50+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2050. Petrus, the undisputed King of Pomerol, was an inconsistent performer between 1976 and 1988, but since 1989 there have been few Bordeaux wines that match this property for its extraordinary combination of power, richness, complexity, and elegance. The 1995 and 1996 are both noteworthy efforts.

Very full and heavy and rich. Extremely rich actually. Almost porty – surely Pétrus – but with heavy new oak influence apparent. Very jagged. Animal. Still quite raw. Lots of alcohol.
