Histoire du domaine
Plots corresponding to what would become Petrus are mentioned in the Pomerol archives as early as 1746, whilst the name Petrus first appears at the end of the 18th century. The Arnaud family owned the estate from 1770 onwards. The wine was mentioned by a Bordeaux wine merchant in 1837 and won gold medals at the Paris World’s Fairs of 1878 and 1889. In 1925, Edmonde Loubat acquired part of the estate, which at the time covered around 7 hectares, and gradually took control of it. She entrusted the marketing of the wine to Jean-Pierre Moueix after the Second World War. Following the death of Edmonde Loubat in 1961, Jean-Pierre Moueix gradually increased his stake and became the sole owner in 1969. During the same period, the vineyard was expanded through the acquisition of plots from the neighbouring Château Gazin, bringing its total area to around 11.4–11.5 hectares. Jean-Claude Berrouet was responsible for winemaking from 1964 onwards for more than four decades. Following the death of Jean-Pierre Moueix in 2003, his son Jean-François Moueix inherited Petrus and took over its management from 2009. Olivier Berrouet, Jean-Claude’s son, took charge of the vineyard and winemaking from the 2008 vintage onwards. The Moueix family currently holds 80 per cent of the shares, with the remaining 20 per cent held by Alejandro Santo Domingo.
