Château Petit Mouton 1994

Château Petit Mouton 1994 is a Pauillac red wine from Bordeaux, produced by Château Mouton Rothschild as the estate's second wine. Its blend combines Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. This vintage is the first to bear the definitive name Petit Mouton. Sourced from a selection of the chateau's young vines, it is harvested, vinified, and bottled at the estate, with fermentation in the oak vat-room and aging in barrels following traditional methods.

Histoire du domaine

In the 18th century, the estate belonged successively to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and then to the Barons of Brane. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction, and it was subsequently renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. His great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, took over the management of the estate in 1922. In 1924, he decided to bottle the entire production at the château, whereas previously the wine had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants. He had the Grand Chai built in 1926 and founded the Baron Philippe de Rothschild company in 1933. From 1945 onwards, the labels for the grand cru were illustrated each year with an original work commissioned from an artist. In 1962, the Museum of Wine in Art was inaugurated at the château. In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, having been classified as a second growth in 1855. On the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his only daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, succeeded him; she launched Aile d’Argent in 1991 and Le Petit Mouton in 1993, before commissioning a new fermentation vat in 2012. Since 2014, the château has been owned by her three children; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy has been in charge of the technical management of the family’s Bordeaux estates since 2020.

It benefits from care comparable to that of the Grand Vin, with rigorous selection and traditional barrel aging.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the wine appeared for the first time with the 1993 vintage under the name “Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild”. As of the 1994 vintage, it adopted its definitive name, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild. Its label is inspired by a drawing made in 1927 by Jean Carlu.
