Histoire du domaine

In the 18th century, the estate belonged successively to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and then to the Barons of Brane. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction, and it was subsequently renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. His great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, took over the management of the estate in 1922. In 1924, he decided to bottle the entire production at the château, whereas previously the wine had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants. He had the Grand Chai built in 1926 and founded the Baron Philippe de Rothschild company in 1933. From 1945 onwards, the labels for the grand cru were illustrated each year with an original work commissioned from an artist. In 1962, the Museum of Wine in Art was inaugurated at the château. In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, having been classified as a second growth in 1855. On the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his only daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, succeeded him; she launched Aile d’Argent in 1991 and Le Petit Mouton in 1993, before commissioning a new fermentation vat in 2012. Since 2014, the château has been owned by her three children; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy has been in charge of the technical management of the family’s Bordeaux estates since 2020.

Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 1999 Mouton-Rothschild is a "useful," perhaps over-looked vintage from the First Growth estate. It has a clean and precise bouquet - you could almost describe this as dainty, which I mean in a positive sense. The fruit is beautifully delineated, almost pastille-like with subtle floral scents emerging with time. The palate is fresh on the entry with supple red berries pierced by a fine line of acidity. No, it is not complex and it has lost a little substance in recent years, yet it is well balanced with sufficient depth and body on the tobacco and cedar-tinged finish. If you can put its status aside, it boils down to nothing more than a well-made, easygoing and refined Pauillac to drink now and over the next decade. Tasted December 2016.

A spicy Bordeaux with berries and hints of currants. Full, super round and soft –surrounded by vanilla and blueberry pie. Lovely. Just coming around now. Delicious.

Harvested 24 September to 2 October. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc. 60% of production used for the grand vin. Vibrant red/black fruit evident. An elegant Mouton with herb and spice notes on the nose, leafy blackcurrant on the medium-bodied palate. Quite restrained, doesn’t have the density of the top vintages but still has a bit of a future ahead. Tannins a little grippy.
