Histoire du domaine

In the 18th century, the estate belonged successively to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and then to the Barons of Brane. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction, and it was subsequently renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. His great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, took over the management of the estate in 1922. In 1924, he decided to bottle the entire production at the château, whereas previously the wine had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants. He had the Grand Chai built in 1926 and founded the Baron Philippe de Rothschild company in 1933. From 1945 onwards, the labels for the grand cru were illustrated each year with an original work commissioned from an artist. In 1962, the Museum of Wine in Art was inaugurated at the château. In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, having been classified as a second growth in 1855. On the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his only daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, succeeded him; she launched Aile d’Argent in 1991 and Le Petit Mouton in 1993, before commissioning a new fermentation vat in 2012. Since 2014, the château has been owned by her three children; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy has been in charge of the technical management of the family’s Bordeaux estates since 2020.

The 1929 Mouton-Rothschild is the oldest bottle I have tasted from this First Growth, although of course, it was a mere "Deuxième Cru" when Baron Philippe de Rothschild made this gorgeous wine. The color was commensurate with its age, showing moderate signs of bricking on the rim, but a healthy color. The bouquet is very typical of this vintage: decayed red fruit indicative of once fleshy, fruit-driven aromatics, cedar, mahogany bureau and a hint of molasses -- all elegant and very refined, holding up in the glass over 20-30 minutes. The palate still displays sublime balance with much greater depth and harmony than the 1929 Beychevelle tasted the previous month. It is complex and nuanced, mulberry and sandalwood, a faint touch of wild mint, Vervain tea emerging with time. It is a glorious Pauillac in its dotage, certainly one of the finest wines that I have encountered from the vintage. It encapsulates everything that mature Bordeaux is about. Tasted October 2016.

The ancient cork had crumbled and wine was slightly hazy, a sort of sludgy mid ruby. Still excitingly vibrant on the nose. Broad, fresh and quite racy. Meaty and dense. Finesse, sweetness and slightly medicinal rather than rich and fleshy at this point in its long life. Amazing survival. Sighed Michael Broadbent,'These wines won't live forever.'
