Château Les Fiefs de Lagrange 1988 Bouteille (75cl) CLA

Château Les Fiefs de Lagrange 1988 is a red wine from Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, produced by Château Lagrange. As the estate's second wine, this cuvée blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Created in 1983 to strengthen the selection for the château's grand vin, Les Fiefs de Lagrange expresses, right from this 1988 vintage, the identity of a Médoc blend from the property. A long-ageing Saint-Julien, representative of the early years of this cuvée.

Château Lagrange

Château Lagrange is a wine estate situated in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, in the Médoc, and is classified as a third growth in the 1855 classification. Owned by the Japanese group Suntory since 1983, it cultivates red grape vines on two gravelly hilltops within the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate also produces wines from plots situated in the neighbouring communes of Saint-Laurent-Médoc and Cussac-Fort-Médoc.

Histoire du domaine

The first recorded mention of vineyards on the estate dates back to 1511. Lagrange’s reputation as a wine-producing estate began to flourish particularly from the 17th century onwards. Count Tanneguy Duchâtel owned the estate from 1842 to 1874; during this period, he expanded the property and modernised its facilities. Château Lagrange was classified as a third growth in 1855. The Cendoya family took ownership in 1925. In 1983, Keizo Saji acquired the château on behalf of the Suntory Group. Suntory then embarked on a programme to restructure the vineyard and renovate the technical buildings and cellars, working with Marcel Ducasse, followed by Kenji Suzuta and Keiichi Shiina. Matthieu Bordes, the estate’s managing director and oenologist, continues this work today with his team. Benjamin Vimal is the technical director and Stéphane Leboucher is the cellar master.

Cuvée

Les Fiefs de Lagrange

Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the second red wine of Château Lagrange, crafted from a selection of batches not chosen for the Grand Vin. It originates notably from fine plots and vines averaging around 30 years of age. Its blend is primarily based on Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot.

Cuvée creation year
1983
Style of the cuvée
An elegant Saint-Julien that is accessible in its youth, featuring supple tannins and a generally fruity and spicy aromatic profile, which then gains depth and intensity with aging. It retains a notable aging potential.
Position within the range
Second red wine of Château Lagrange, positioned below the Grand Vin within the estate's range.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created in 1983 to allow for a stricter selection for the Grand Vin, this cuvée is among the pioneering Bordeaux second wines of that era. Today, the estate presents it as a wine possessing its own distinct qualities, beyond its role as a second wine.
