Histoire du domaine

The vineyard’s origins date back to 1638, when Maître Jean de Moytié owned vines on a gravelly hill known as Mont-Moytié. In 1740, Blaise Antoine Alexandre de Gascq became the owner of the estate, then known as Léoville. Following his death, the property was gradually divided up. In 1840, Jeanne de Las Cases bequeathed part of Léoville to her daughter Jeanne, wife of Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré, whose surname became associated with the estate. Château Léoville Poyferré was classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855. The Poyferré family sold the estate in 1865 to Lalande and Erlanger; Armand Lalande and his son-in-law Édouard Lawton then took over its management from 1866. In 1920, the Cuvelier family acquired Léoville Poyferré and Château Moulin Riche from the Lawton family. Didier Cuvelier took over the management of the family estates in 1979. The vineyard has held Level 3 High Environmental Value certification since the 2017 vintage. Sara Lecompte Cuvelier has been managing the estates since 2018, whilst Didier Thomann serves as cellar master.

Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades.

Very sweet and fresh. Tough end. Interesting and unusual!
