Histoire du domaine

The vineyard’s origins date back to 1638, when Maître Jean de Moytié owned vines on a gravelly hill known as Mont-Moytié. In 1740, Blaise Antoine Alexandre de Gascq became the owner of the estate, then known as Léoville. Following his death, the property was gradually divided up. In 1840, Jeanne de Las Cases bequeathed part of Léoville to her daughter Jeanne, wife of Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré, whose surname became associated with the estate. Château Léoville Poyferré was classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855. The Poyferré family sold the estate in 1865 to Lalande and Erlanger; Armand Lalande and his son-in-law Édouard Lawton then took over its management from 1866. In 1920, the Cuvelier family acquired Léoville Poyferré and Château Moulin Riche from the Lawton family. Didier Cuvelier took over the management of the family estates in 1979. The vineyard has held Level 3 High Environmental Value certification since the 2017 vintage. Sara Lecompte Cuvelier has been managing the estates since 2018, whilst Didier Thomann serves as cellar master.

The 1982 Léoville Poyferré continues to drink brilliantly at age 40 (and I have enjoyed three bottles this year), wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with notions of loamy soil, cigar wrapper, licorice, black truffle and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, broad and sumptuous, with a velvety attack that segues into a deep, fleshy core, it's generous and enveloping, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that still deliver a vestige of back-end grip. Today, this is a strong contender for the title of Saint-Julien's wine of the vintage, with Ducru-Beaucaillou and Léoville-Las Cases as its only plausible rivals.

Rather porty with dried tomato to the currants and light raisins on the nose. Full-bodied with lots of dried fruit, as well as mushroom, cedar and some bark flavors. It’s nicely layered and complex. Slightly drying out. Drink now.

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. What a treat to taste this. Brownish red colour. A great example of the beauty of mature bordeaux aromas. Hard to describe but unmistakable. Lots of mulched leaves and something more balsamic, even minty, plus coffee, earth and a savoury umami character. On the palate, this has a succulent leathery sweetness and silky tannins. What a beauty. Perfect balance still. So much freshness. More mushroom with aeration, less mint, more umami. Gorgeous. Captivating, ever-changing in the glass.
