Château Lafleur

Château Lafleur is a 4.58-hectare family-run estate situated on the Pomerol plateau, near Pétrus. Run by the Guinaudeau family, its vineyard comprises a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, known locally as ‘bouchet’. From the 2025 vintage onwards, the estate’s wines will be marketed under the ‘Vin de France’ designation, without claiming the Pomerol appellation.

Histoire du domaine

Château Lafleur was founded in 1872, when Henri Greloud, an ancestor of Baptiste Guinaudeau, acquired a plot of approximately 4.58 hectares on the Pomerol plateau. In the early 20th century, his son-in-law André Robin left a lasting mark on the estate and, in particular, undertook the replanting of the vineyard in the 1920s, ensuring that Bouchet, the local Cabernet Franc, retained a prominent place. His daughters, Thérèse and Marie Robin, subsequently inherited Lafleur and managed the estate for several decades. Following Thérèse’s death, Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau took over the estate on a leasehold basis in 1985. They created ‘Les Pensées de Lafleur’ in 1987 from a specific section of the vineyard. Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau joined the estate in 2000, and the Guinaudeau family became its owners in 2002. Baptiste and Julie Guinaudeau now run the family estate, with Omri Ram as technical director. In August 2025, the family announced that it would no longer claim the Pomerol and Bordeaux appellations from the 2025 harvest onwards; the wines of the Société Agricole de Lafleur have since been classified as Vin de France.

The 1982 Lafleur is probably my favorite wine of the vintage, even if there are two or three wines that can rival it in quality, simply because it made such an impression on me when I first tasted it as a student. Today, from a perfect cellar where it has been stored since release, it remains extremely youthful; but it is also much more expressive than it was only six or seven years ago, offering up a singular bouquet of kirsch, sweet berries, licorice, orange zest, exotic spices and crushed mint. Full-bodied, satiny and sensual, it combines huge concentration with rare energy, exhibiting beautifully melted tannins and concluding with a long, pure finish. If I owned any bottles, and sadly I don't, I struggle to think of any circumstances in which I would willingly part with them.

A wine with perfect balance and a harmony of fruit with a plum and shaved chocolate character. Full body with a dense and beautiful palate and ultra-fine tannins. Intense and racy with gorgeous fruit. Goes on for minutes.

Mid glowing ruby. So glorious! If only I'd hung on to my case...! Long and rich and sweet. Phew... Gamey and lead pencils. Like lilies and opulent but not sickly. Tobacco-leaf aromas. Meaty. But fresh and so whistle clean. The only thing stopping me give this perfect marks is the suspicion that it may not be a very long-distance runner.
