Château Lafleur

Château Lafleur is a 4.58-hectare family-run estate situated on the Pomerol plateau, near Pétrus. Run by the Guinaudeau family, its vineyard comprises a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, known locally as ‘bouchet’. From the 2025 vintage onwards, the estate’s wines will be marketed under the ‘Vin de France’ designation, without claiming the Pomerol appellation.

Histoire du domaine

Château Lafleur was founded in 1872, when Henri Greloud, an ancestor of Baptiste Guinaudeau, acquired a plot of approximately 4.58 hectares on the Pomerol plateau. In the early 20th century, his son-in-law André Robin left a lasting mark on the estate and, in particular, undertook the replanting of the vineyard in the 1920s, ensuring that Bouchet, the local Cabernet Franc, retained a prominent place. His daughters, Thérèse and Marie Robin, subsequently inherited Lafleur and managed the estate for several decades. Following Thérèse’s death, Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau took over the estate on a leasehold basis in 1985. They created ‘Les Pensées de Lafleur’ in 1987 from a specific section of the vineyard. Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau joined the estate in 2000, and the Guinaudeau family became its owners in 2002. Baptiste and Julie Guinaudeau now run the family estate, with Omri Ram as technical director. In August 2025, the family announced that it would no longer claim the Pomerol and Bordeaux appellations from the 2025 harvest onwards; the wines of the Société Agricole de Lafleur have since been classified as Vin de France.

More and more the 1978 Lafleur is looking like one of the two or three finest wines of the vintage, along with La Mission-Haut-Brion and Latour. This dark plum/garnet-colored wine exhibits a knock-out nose of black cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, with powerful tannin remaining, this highly extracted wine is atypical for the 1978 vintage. It is a weighty, broad-shouldered, muscular, virile 1978 that is just beginning to reveal secondary nuances and complexity. I have always thought this wine could develop along the lines of the 1966, and I am more convinced than ever that it is the seventies clone of that vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020. Dep dark ruby with a mature rim. Finer, sleeker, less opulent nose than the 1979. Very well mannered and fresh and lively. Tannins less obvious than in the 1979. More compact and less flashy than the 1979. Very racy and refreshing. Neat, with Cabernet Franc in the ascendant. A very attractive wine for current drinking with nothing in excess. Still very vibrant and fruity – surprisingly so for most 1978s have had a note of decay for some time. Very pretty indeed. Very refreshing and neat.
