Histoire du domaine

The Lafite estate is recorded as a wine producer as early as 1234. The estate is situated on a gravelly ridge in Pauillac, the name of which is thought to derive from ‘La Hite’, a Gascon term meaning ‘hill’. In 1855, Château Lafite was listed amongst the Premiers Grands Crus in the Médoc wine classification. Baron James de Rothschild acquired the property in 1868. The château then took the name Château Lafite Rothschild. Since that acquisition, the descendants of James de Rothschild have ensured the continuity of the estate across several generations. Saskia de Rothschild, a member of the sixth generation, is currently chair of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The technical management of Château Lafite Rothschild is overseen by Eric Kohler, who is also technical director at Château Duhart-Milon.

The 1976 Lafite clearly stands far above the crowd in this vintage. A beautiful bouquet of seductive cedarwood, spices, and ripe fruit precedes a very concentrated, darkly colored wine, with great length and texture. Some amber is just beginning to appear at the edge. The 1976 has turned out to be the best Lafite of the '70s. It is gorgeous to drink at present. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted, 9/96.

This is the wine of the vintage. I love the rosewater, currants and citrus character to this now. It's still full body yet so ethereal. It goes on and on in the finish turning creamy and citrusy. From magnum.

The year of the sirocco. A hot wind blew during the harvest. This caused a phenomenon of dehydration. Before that, we had been through the hottest summer in 27 years, and dry into the bargain! Harvest started on 15 September, with over-ripe grapes. A vintage that will last. The year that Eric arrived at Lafite apparently. Contains as much as 30% Merlot. It had been ages since I tasted a red bordeaux 1976; a Léoville Barton in 2015 was the most recent. Transparent garnet. Something very slightly mousey on the nose (I am very sensitive to mousiness). A sweet start and then a little dry and short of fruit. It still has some charm but lacked a bit of juice and freshness. The finish was very intriguing and nuanced, however. Definitely first-growth quality, but getting on a bit.
