Château La Tour Haut Brion

Château La Tour Haut-Brion was a Pessac-Léognan estate situated in Talence, on a vineyard neighbouring Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Acquired by Domaine Clarence Dillon in 1983, it ceased to be marketed under its own name after the 2005 vintage. The grapes from its plots were subsequently incorporated into the wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion.

Histoire du domaine

In the Middle Ages, the terroir of La Tour Haut-Brion formed part of the La Tour Rostaing estate. The Rostaing family were already cultivating vines there in the 16th century. In the mid-18th century, the estate belonged to Guillaume Joseph Saige. It then passed to the Cayrou brothers in the 19th century, who added ‘Haut-Brion’ to its name. In the 1930s, the estate became part of the Woltner family’s holdings, which were then linked to the neighbouring property of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. La Tour Haut-Brion was classified as a Graves cru classé for red wines in the 1953 classification. Domaine Clarence Dillon acquired Château La Mission Haut-Brion and its associated estates, including La Tour Haut-Brion, in 1983. The estate was then managed as part of the same technical operation as Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. The 2005 vintage was the last to be produced under the Château La Tour Haut-Brion label. From the 2006 harvest onwards, the grapes were incorporated into the wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion, bringing an end to the estate’s independent commercial existence.

La Tour-Haut-Brion's 1996 is an aromatic, surprisingly evolved wine for the vintage with a dark plum color, and a pronounced, smoky, cassis, weedy, dried herb-scented bouquet. A medium-bodied, classic, mid-weight Bordeaux, with plenty of spice, sweet fruit, elegance and complexity, it is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc. It should provide delicious drinking early, and last for a decade.

Mature rim and ruby middle. Powerfully aromatic with tannins fully evolved on the palate. Already an attractive drink even if a bit chunky and very very slightly green notes. Medium weight.
