Histoire du domaine
The first known document relating to the estate is dated 25 November 1560: the Tulle de Villefranche family acquired a country house known as the Grange de Beauvenir. This family developed the estate over the following three centuries. In the 18th century, the Marquis Jean-Dominique de Tulle de Villefranche had the château built on the foundations of older cellars. From 1776 onwards, the estate’s wines were shipped in bottles, a practice that was ahead of its time in the region. In May 1877, Major Joseph Ducos acquired the property, which had been affected by phylloxera, and began to rebuild the vineyard by grafting onto resistant rootstocks. Following a period marked in particular by the requisition of the château by the German army in 1943, the Richard family bought the estate in April 1985. They restored the château, modernised the winemaking facilities and expanded the vineyard in 1991 from 60 to 90 hectares, with the acquisition of plots in La Crau. The entire vineyard was awarded Ecocert organic certification in 1998. Julien Thorn is now the cellar master at Château La Nerthe.
