Château La Louvière

A historic estate in Léognan, Château La Louvière produces red and white wines in the Pessac-Léognan appellation across 69 hectares of vines. Its vineyard of deep gravels and varied soils, predominantly gravelly or clay-limestone, surrounds a late 18th-century neoclassical residence classified as a Historical Monument. Acquired by André Lurton in 1965, the estate remains in the hands of the Famille André Lurton.

Histoire du domaine

The presence of La Louvière, then called "La Lobeyra", is recorded as early as 1310. The modern vineyard gradually took shape between 1510 and 1550 under the impetus of Pierre de Guilloche and his son Jean, members of a family of jurats and councillors to the Parliament of Bordeaux. In 1620, a donation transferred the estate to the Chartreuse de la Miséricorde de Bordeaux: for nearly two centuries, the Carthusian Fathers developed viticulture and winemaking, contributing to the renown of the white and red wines of La Louvière. Following the confiscation of church property during the Revolution, the property was sold at auction in 1791 to Jean-Baptiste Mareilhac, a Bordeaux merchant. He entrusted the architect François Lhôte with the construction of the current neoclassical residence and the Flemish painter François-Louis Lonsing with its interior decoration. The Mareilhac family kept the estate for a large part of the 19th century. Alfred Bertrand-Taquet, a shareholder of the Revue Vinicole, bought it in 1911 and managed it until 1944, prior to a period of decline. The site was registered on the Inventory of Historical Monuments in 1946. André Lurton acquired Château La Louvière in 1965 and initiated the restoration of the property as well as the revival of the vineyard. The residence was classified as a Historical Monument in 1991, and a new semi-subterranean cellar dedicated to the aging of reds, capable of holding about a thousand barrels, was inaugurated in 2009. Following the passing of André Lurton in 2019, the estate remains within the Famille André Lurton, under the presidency of Jacques Lurton.

The fully mature 1978 La Louviere is charmingly fruity, soft, round, and supple, with a pleasing, ripe berry, tobacco-scented character. It is medium to full bodied, with little tannins present. This precocious, easy-to-drink wine should be drunk up. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 12/84.
