Histoire du domaine
The estate’s origins date back to the early 18th century, when the Libéral family, then active in the wine brokerage business, gradually acquired plots of land in Pauillac. The family became owners of the estate in 1834 and associated their name with that of the locality of Bages. Château Haut-Bages Libéral was classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 classification. In 1864, the Libéral family sold the property to Antoine de Solminihac. The estate subsequently changed hands several times before being acquired by the Cruse family in 1960. The Cruses then undertook a programme to replant the vineyard. The Villars-Merlaut family took over the property in 1983. Claire Villars-Lurton, the third generation of this family, took over the management in 2000 and began transitioning the vineyard towards biodynamic farming and agroforestry from 2007 onwards. The winemaking facilities and historic buildings underwent refurbishment in 2017. The château has been certified as an organic wine estate since 2019 and as a biodynamic wine estate since 2021. Thomas Bontemps is the technical director responsible for winemaking.
