Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1725, when Joseph Stanislas Gruaud established a vineyard in the parish of Saint-Julien. In 1781, it was passed on to his nephew, the Chevalier de Larose, whose name was then associated with that of Gruaud. The estate was sold at auction in 1812. It was recognised as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification. In the 19th century, the estate was divided into two parts, marketing, in particular, the wines Gruaud Larose Sarget and Gruaud Larose Faure. Désiré Cordier acquired the Sarget portion in 1917, then reunited the two parts of the estate in 1935. The property subsequently came under the control of the Suez Group in 1983, and then Alcatel-Alsthom in 1993. The Merlaut family acquired the château in 1997. Jean Merlaut is now the owner; Nicolas Sinoquet is the managing director, Virginie Sallette is the technical director, and Gautier Pointe is listed as cellar master on the technical sheet for the 2025 vintage.

Surprisingly accessible as well as supple, this 2001 St.-Julien reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a rich bouquet of smoke, roasted vegetables, black currants, plums, licorice, and Asian spices. Velvety-textured and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit, and a plump, expansive, plush texture, this is an atypically forward Gruaud Larose to drink now and over the next 12-14 years.

James Suckling 93/100

A dense and decadent wine with chocolate, currant and licorice aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. A beautiful wine now. It shows the finesse and class of an aged Bordeaux.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Pale brick hue. More complexity and presence than the 2000. Forest-floor notes with a hint of cedar and spice. Still upright and structured, the fruit holding. Acidity a little intrusive but maintains freshness.
