Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1725, when Joseph Stanislas Gruaud established a vineyard in the parish of Saint-Julien. In 1781, it was passed on to his nephew, the Chevalier de Larose, whose name was then associated with that of Gruaud. The estate was sold at auction in 1812. It was recognised as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification. In the 19th century, the estate was divided into two parts, marketing, in particular, the wines Gruaud Larose Sarget and Gruaud Larose Faure. Désiré Cordier acquired the Sarget portion in 1917, then reunited the two parts of the estate in 1935. The property subsequently came under the control of the Suez Group in 1983, and then Alcatel-Alsthom in 1993. The Merlaut family acquired the château in 1997. Jean Merlaut is now the owner; Nicolas Sinoquet is the managing director, Virginie Sallette is the technical director, and Gautier Pointe is listed as cellar master on the technical sheet for the 2025 vintage.

One of only a handful of vintage successes in the Medoc, Gruaud-Larose continues to taste uncommonly fruity, deep, and round. There is no evidence of dilution from the heavy rains that ruined many others. This is a succulently textured, generous, perfumed wine with medium to full body. The 1964 Gruaud-Larose has been fully mature for over a decade without drying out. A sleeper! Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 12/88.

Still a lively dense crimson. Some sweetness still on the nose. Rich and full and really most impressive! This is definitely one of the good 1964s. Full and rich and meaty with a neat finish and not fading at all fast even if it is at the peak of its powers now. Fresh vital finish. Pretty impressive. Will the red Bordeaux being made today last as long as 30 years, I wonder? £368 Caves de Pyrène
