Château Giscours 2013 Magnum (150cl)

Château Giscours 2013 is a red wine from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, classified as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. It is made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. In a vintage marked by heavy rainfall and relatively cool temperatures, the harvest took place from September 30 to October 15. The grapes underwent manual and optical sorting, followed by a 35-day maceration at 28 °C in concrete and stainless steel vats, and then 17 months of aging in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. Jancis Robinson awards it 17/20 and recommends drinking between 2019 and 2028; The Wine Advocate gives it a score of 87/100. Critics highlight a delicate and balanced Margaux with fresh black and red fruits, a fine texture, and nuances of tea leaf and olive.

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2013 Château Giscours is conspicuously lighter in color than either the 2012 or 2014. Those red cherries and fresh strawberry fruit are intact after bottling, not complex, but clean and fresh, now accompanied by a black olive tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with a pointed, angular opening and it feels a little hollow thereafter. As I (rather glibly) commented in my barrel report, it stumbles over the finish line and that is still the case. It will be an early-drinking Giscours that should be consumed within the first ten years. Tasted June 2015.

A fresh and clean red with bright acidity and lively fruit. Medium to full body, fine tannins and lively finish. Beautiful intensity on the finish for the vintage. Delicate. Drink or hold.

Sports a tangy savory streak, with a hint of olive amid the core of damson plum and black cherry fruit. Turns a touch crisp through the finish, but has enough flesh to wait it out, briefly, in the cellar. Slightly better than previously reviewed. Drink now through 2019. 15,000 cases made. Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Fresh dark fruit, nicely aromatic, some tea leaf. Juicy and finely textured. Very nice balance and elegant. Scented to the end.
