Histoire du domaine

The oldest records relating to Giscours date back to the 16th century. Between 1552 and 1571, Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy cloth merchant from Bordeaux, developed the vineyard by planting vines on land that was then uncultivated; the first documented grape harvest took place in 1571. Jean-Pierre Pescatore acquired the estate in 1847 and hired Pierre Skawinski, who oversaw major work on the vineyard and the buildings. Château Giscours was classified as a third grand cru in the 1855 classification. Between 1875 and 1890, Édouard Cruse modernised the estate, commissioned the creation of the landscaped park and built the Suzanne farmhouse. After the Second World War, Nicolas Tari took over the estate and reorganised its 300 hectares of land. A wine produced from historic plots within the Haut-Médoc appellation was launched in 1992. In 1995, Éric Albada Jelgersma took over the Société d’Exploitation du Château Giscours and embarked on a restructuring of the vineyard and a renovation of the cellars. Following his death, his children Dennis, Derk and Valérie Albada Jelgersma took over in 2018, with Alexander van Beek as managing director. Didier Foret is technical director and Denis Uteau is cellar master.

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2001 Château Giscours is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot picked between September 28 and October 12. Comparing it directly with the 2000, I discerned a little more precision on the nose, the fruit a little fresher with lifted mulberry, violet and lavender scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, more tensile than the 2000, if not quite the same level of fruit concentration. It is not plump like the previous vintage, though there is fine animation here with a vein of spiciness surfacing towards the finish. This constitutes one of the finest Giscours in recent years, a Margaux with breeding and poise. In retrospect, this was the beginning of a turnaround in fortunes after an inconsistent period throughout the 1990s. Tasted June 2015.

Very perfumed and delicately fruity with plums and violets. Full body with super-integrated tannins and a clean finish. Lovely texture to this red. Drink now.

Glossy crimson. Sophisticated nose with very good quality oak. Very attractive balance and lovely freshness above all. Not a heavyweight but a very attractive wine. Good length and integrity. Lovely already. Pavillon Rouge?
