Château Figeac 2001
Château Figeac 2001 is a red wine from Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, produced by Château Figeac, owned by the Manoncourt family and classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion. Its blend combines 35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot. The Wine Advocate awards it 93/100. The publication describes a wine that is still fresh and refined, balanced by a precise acidity, where the Cabernet Franc brings a particularly clear expression. Aeration in a decanter suits it well; it can continue to evolve for two decades after its tasting in 2015.

The estate, owned by the Manoncourt family since 1892, cultivates 41 hectares of vines within a single, contiguous 54-hectare estate. Histoire du domaine
Figeac’s wine-growing history dates back to the 15th century, when the estate was associated with the de Cazes family. In 1586, Raymond de Cazes had the château rebuilt in the Renaissance style, following the destruction of the previous building during the Wars of Religion. In 1892, Henriette de Chèvremont and her husband André Villepigue, Thierry Manoncourt’s grandparents, acquired the property. Their friend Albert Macquin, an agricultural engineer involved in the fight against phylloxera, had encouraged them to make this purchase; he subsequently managed the estate for ten years and played a part in the restructuring of the vineyard and the wine-making facilities. Thierry Manoncourt, an agricultural engineer, settled in Figeac in 1947 and took charge of the estate on a long-term basis. He developed the grape varieties and the viticulture and winemaking practices that form the basis of the estate’s modern style. Château-Figeac was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé from the very inception of the Saint-Émilion classification in 1955. In 1970, the estate decided to age its wines in new oak barrels and to bottle them entirely on-site; a new winemaking facility was built in 1971–1972. Since 2013, Frédéric Faye has been managing director and Jean-Valmy Nicolas has been co-manager; Romain Jean-Pierre is technical director and Jean Albino is cellar master. A new cellar was commissioned in 2021. In the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification, Château-Figeac was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A.
