Histoire du domaine
Vineyards in the Milon area are documented as early as the beginning of the 18th century and contributed to the income of the Lord of Lafite at that time. Jean Duhart, a sailor and privateer under Louis XV, married Suzanne Casteja in 1778; she came from a Bordeaux family that owned vineyards in the Médoc, and the couple settled on the Milon hillside. On the death of Suzanne Casteja in 1838, her nephew Pierre Casteja inherited 14 hectares of vineyards and consolidated them with other plots. The estate’s wine took the name Duhart-Milon in 1868. The wine is listed amongst the fourth grands crus classés of Pauillac in the 1855 classification. The Casteja family retained the land until 1937, after which it was divided amongst several owners. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) purchased the estate in 1962 and gradually reassembled the vineyard. The cellars were renovated in 2003. Today, Éric Kohler is the technical director of Château Duhart-Milon and Château Lafite Rothschild.
