Histoire du domaine

The earliest records of the vineyard date back to the 14th century, when the land formed part of the seigneury of Mouton. In 1660, a succession made the property an independent estate in the hands of the d’Armailhacq family, who gave it its name and retained ownership for seven generations. In the mid-19th century, Armand d’Armailhacq played a part in the development of winegrowing in the Médoc and, in 1855, published a treatise on vine cultivation and winemaking in the Médoc. That same year, the château, then known as Mouton d’Armailhacq, was classified as a fifth growth in the Médoc and Sauternes wine classification. At the end of the 19th century, Count Adrien de Ferrand inherited the estate, continued the work on the vineyards and had the wine cellar and outbuildings rebuilt. Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired the estate in 1933. From the 1934 vintage onwards, it took the name Château Mouton Baron Philippe, then Château Mouton Baronne Philippe from 1975. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild reinstated the name Château d’Armailhac in 1989. Since 2021, the estate has had a new wine-making facility and a new cellar; winemaking is overseen by Cédric Marc, cellar master, as part of a team coordinated across the Pauillac estates by Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy.

Chunky cherry and black currant fruit emerge from this medium-bodied, tasty, pure Pauillac. Although there is not a lot of depth, texture or length, what is there is pleasant. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.

This is fresh and clean with citrus and currant character. Medium body, fine tannins and a delicate finish. A little lean but I like it. Clarity of fruit here. Give it three or four years to soften. Try in 2017.

Tasted blind. Brett was called on this, but not by me. Deep garnet. Quite intense fruit, with fairly youthful fruit the dominant element. Then quite a bit of aggressive acid and tannin on the end. Not much fun but no obvious faults.
