Histoire du domaine

The Clos du Marquis brand was established in the early 20th century, when vines were planted on the Petit Clos, adjacent to Château Léoville Las Cases, the former residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Its first vintage was 1902. From the outset, the aim of this brand was to highlight the expression of terroirs distinct from those of the Léoville Las Cases vineyard. The vineyard producing Clos du Marquis has historically remained separate from that of Léoville Las Cases. Today, it is mainly situated on the terroirs of Saint-Julien, notably close to Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton. Long presented as the second wine of Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis is now regarded as a wine in its own right, produced from dedicated plots. The estate remains within the Domaines Delon portfolio and is owned by the Delon family. Michael Georges is currently in charge of its technical management.

The 1999 Clos de Marquis reveals sweet black currant fruit on the attack, but the finish is tannic and compressed. Drink it over the next decade.

From magnum. Deep garnet. Subtle but complex and spicy. Nice freshness on the nose, even a touch leafy but nothing like the 2000 tasted just before. Plenty of red fruit. Very St-Julien. Smells so youthful though it is not very open yet. More savoury and dark, darker fruit than the 2005, more mineral but with a juicy frehness. Well structured, dense, dry and mouthwatering finish, more grain in the tannin than in the 2005 and the 2000. Creamy finish. Still has power and depth. 13%
