Histoire du domaine
The Batailley estate was gradually established between the 16th and 18th centuries. Records from the 18th century show the property was owned by the Saint-Martin family of Pauillac, after which a portion passed to the wine merchant Guillaume Pécholier in 1791. Daniel Guestier acquired the estate in 1816, expanded the vineyard and facilities, and the property was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. After Daniel Guestier, his son succeeded him in 1847, and the banker Constant Halphen became the owner in 1866. The brothers Marcel and Francis Borie, then co-managers of the Borie-Manoux firm, purchased Château Batailley in 1924. When the two branches of the Borie family went their separate ways in the 1940s, part of the vineyard became Château Haut-Batailley, whilst Château Batailley passed to Marcel Borie. In 1961, Émile Castéja, Marcel Borie’s son-in-law, took over the estate and ensured its continuity within the Castéja family. Philippe Castéja has been managing the château since the 2000s, with the support of his son Frédéric Castéja. Since March 2023, Hugues Mathieu has been the cellar master and head of winemaking.
