Histoire du domaine

The Bastore estate, a former royal property, is first recorded in 1453. It was sold on 3 July 1711 to Vincent de La Montaigne, a councillor at the Parliament of Bordeaux; his family name was subsequently added to that of Bastore. After passing through several generations of the de Lamontagne family, the estate was sold in 1809 to Anne Senhil, wife of the wine merchant Jean-Baptiste Guilhou. In 1827, it passed to Mirian Salzedo, widow of Fonsèque. In 1838, Joseph Eugène Larrieu, who also owned Château Haut-Brion, acquired the estate and gradually expanded it; wine-growing became the main activity there. His son Amédée Larrieu succeeded him in 1859 and managed Bastore until his death in 1873. The château was sold to Crédit Foncier de France in 1936, and the BPCE group subsequently sold it to the Moulin-Houzé and Cathiard families in 2014. Having converted to organic farming since the 2016 vintage, the estate was acquired by the Helfrich family in November 2018. Pietro Pastore, the estate’s technical manager and oenologist, now oversees viticultural operations and winemaking.

The 2017 Bastor-Lamontagne features pronounced notes of ripe pineapple, spice cake and lemon marmalade with hints of acacia honey, tangerine peel and wet wool. The palate has fantastic intensity and tension with loads of lift on the tangy finish.

James Suckling 89/100

A tight, fresh Sauternes with pleasant, bitter-peach and apple character. Medium-bodied and lightly sweet. Light salted-caramel aftertaste. Drink now.

Tasted blind. Coppery gold colour in the glass. Full of saffron and ginger, there is a hit of botrytis on the nose. Sultanas, dried figs. Powerful and full of burnt sugar. This is heady and caramelised but the fruit weight just about carries it off. Could get better with time.
