Château Angélus

Château Angélus is a wine estate in Saint-Émilion, situated on the slopes and at the southern foot of the appellation, in a natural amphitheatre close to the town. Its vineyard covers 42 hectares and is owned by the de Boüard de Laforest family, now represented by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal. The name Angélus refers to the bells of the three neighbouring churches, which could once be heard from the vineyards.

Histoire du domaine

The historical account published by the estate traces the Boüard de Laforest family’s settlement in Saint-Émilion back to 1782, when Jean de Boüard de Laforest settled there. In 1795, his daughter Catherine Sophie married Charles Souffrain de Lavergne and moved to the Mazerat vineyard, which was owned by her husband. At the start of the 20th century, Maurice de Boüard de Laforest inherited the estate and expanded it, notably by adding a three-hectare plot named l’Angelus in 1920. He passed the property on to his sons Jacques and Christian in 1945. The château was classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the first Saint-Émilion classification in 1954. In 1985, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest took over the management of the estate, and Jean-Bernard Grenié joined him in 1987. The estate was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B in 1996, and then to that of Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2012. Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal joined the management team in 2012 and is now Chairwoman, Chief Executive and owner of Angélus. In January 2022, the château announced that it was withdrawing its application for the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification.

I had this wine from my cellar, as well as at a tasting in Zurich in February of 2015. It is one of the handful of 2003s I bought from the Right Bank of Bordeaux in this vintage. Angelus really nailed the vintage, and has produced a fully mature wine that’s truly strutting its stuff. Dense, bluish/purple, it offers gorgeous notes of espresso roast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers and a touch of chocolate. It is full-bodied, opulent and seems close to full maturity, as it is evolving quickly. The wine is full-bodied, rich and should be drunk over the next decade.

A compelling nose of curry and dark fruits, with rose petal and tobacco undertones. Frankly, a wild nose. Full-bodied and racy, this has fine tannins and a round texture. Fresh herbs, berries, and currants on the palate open up to a fresh finish. Three more years will do this wine good. Pull the cork in 2013.

Magnum. 57% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot. He thought the Merlot was a bit heavy and overripe and declassified some of it to have this proportion. Paler than most, especially at the rim. Sweet and rather formless on the nose. Very much an exception from the style of the younger vintages. Just a hint of raisins and very drying tannins. Not the intensity of fruit on the mid palate – a bit of a hole there. There is some freshness, presumably thanks to the Cabernet Franc, but it fades awfully fast. Less vitality than most vintages.
