Champagne Jacques Selosse Initiale, Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, dégorgement 2003 Bouteille (75cl)
Champagne Jacques Selosse Initial is a non-vintage Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from the Côte des Blancs, crafted by Jacques Selosse and disgorged in 2003. This cuvée relies on a blend of three years and on Chardonnays from Grand Cru-classified vineyards, notably around Avize, Cramant, and Oger. The base wines are barrel-aged, and the cuvée benefits from extended aging on the lees prior to disgorgement. The family estate is based in Avize and also farms vineyards in several great Champagne terroirs.

Histoire du domaine
Jacques Selosse moved to Avize in 1947, although he did not come from a family of winegrowers. He founded the estate with his wife in 1949, starting with just a few plots of vines. During his early years, he mainly sold his grapes to wine merchants. Experiments in winemaking with a view to producing his own champagne began in 1959. The estate’s first winemaking took place in 1964, yielding 2,500 bottles. Anselme Selosse joined the estate in 1974 after training in Beaune, and took over its management in 1980. Under his leadership, the estate developed a viticultural approach based first on organic farming from 1990, then biodynamics from 1996, and finally an approach inspired by permaculture from 2002. He also introduced the practice of vinifying and maturing wine from individual plots in barrels. Guillaume Selosse joined his father at the estate in 2012 and has been in charge since 2018. The vineyard now covers 8.3 hectares, spread across 54 plots, mainly classified as grands crus.
Initial
Initial is a Blanc de Blancs champagne made from Chardonnay sourced from Avize, Cramant, and Oger, primarily from vines located at the foot of the slopes. The cuvée blends three successive vintages and represents the classic expression of Domaine Jacques Selosse.
- Style of the cuvée
- A vinous, powerful, and textured champagne, marked by oak aging, controlled oxidation, a profound chalky and saline expression, alongside a freshness that preserves balance.
- Position within the range
- The flagship cuvee and gateway to the range, presented as the classic and ambassadorial expression of the estate.
Histoire de la cuvée
The cuvée was previously marketed under the name Brut Tradition before being renamed Initial in the early 2000s. Anselme Selosse built it around three successive vintages originating from the lower slope sectors, in contrast to Version Originale, which mainly comes from higher elevations.
