Moët & Chandon is a Champagne house based in Épernay, founded in 1743 by Claude Moët. Histoire du domaine

Claude Moët founded his wine merchant’s business in Épernay in 1743. His grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, subsequently developed overseas markets and contributed to the company’s international expansion. In 1816, Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles became his business partner. When Jean-Rémy Moët retired from the business in 1833, the company was passed on to his son Victor Moët-Romont and his son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles. It then took the name Moët & Chandon. During the 19th century, the house significantly increased its shipments and commercial presence. It is now part of the LVMH group, within MHCS. Benoît Gouez has served as cellar master there since 2005.

Cuvée

Dom Pérignon

Dom Pérignon is a prestige cuvée produced exclusively as a vintage champagne, with certain years possibly not declared. Always a blend, it seeks harmony between the character of the vintage and the signature of the house. The Vintage benefits from at least eight years of aging before its release.

Origin of the cuvée name
The cuvée is named after Dom Pierre Pérignon, cellarer of the Hautvillers Abbey from 1668, whose creative ambition and pursuit of excellence it claims.
Cuvée creation year
1921
Style of the cuvée
Blended vintage champagne striving above all for harmony, featuring a general profile marked by precision, intensity, a tactile dimension, minerality, and the complexity acquired through long maturation on lees.
Position within the range
Historical prestige cuvée, today an autonomous house and the pinnacle of the vintage champagne offering within Moët Hennessy.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created by Moët & Chandon starting from the 1921 harvest, Dom Pérignon was first marketed in 1936. Historically presented as the "Cuvée Dom Pérignon" of Moët & Chandon, it is now developed as a distinct House within Moët Hennessy.

The 2000 Brut Dom Perignon is a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apricots and pears, with sweet notes of mint and licorice that linger on the long finish. This perfumed, inviting Dom Perignon is elegance personified, and in this vintage the wine fully merits its lofty reputation. According to winemaker Vincent Chaperone there is only one disgorgement date for the first release of Dom Perignon, and the 2000 was disgorged over a period of weeks in March and April, 2007, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Moet & Chandon is one of Champagne’s giants when it comes to the sheer number of bottles that emerge from its cellars each year. The house’s top wine, Dom Perignon, is quite possibly the most iconic wine in Champagne, and perhaps the world. Production numbers are always kept close to the vest, but that notwithstanding, it is impossible to ignore the exceptional quality that the best vintages offer. At its best Dom Perignon is also an extremely ageworthy wine. In recent years Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy has instituted a program of re-releasing newly disgorged wines under the OEnotheque program. Younger vintages see a second release (also known as second plenitude), while some of the older, classic vintages from the 1970s are on their third release (also known as third plenitude). While the OEnotheques, particularly the third releases, can be very pricey, at their finest they offer an extraordinary, otherworldly drinking experience matched by few wines in the world. Although Moet & Chandon doesn't disclose disgorgement dates, Geoffroy is considering adding that information in the near future. An article covering a number older vintages of Dom Perignon will appear soon on www.erobertparker.com Importer: Moet Hennessy USA, New York, NY; tel. (212) 251-8200

The original cuvée disgorged in 2007. Richard Geoffroy took over from Dominique Foulon in 2000 and was told, you won’t have same vintage on both Grand Vintage and Dom P but this turned out not to be the case.Fresh and quite open and developed. Dry finish. Lightly oxidatively dried sensation but on the finish very rewarding.
